Greenwich wasted little time in setting the tone of Friday’s softball game against visiting Wilton.

A five-run first inning set the Cardinals up nicely for a successful Senior Day.

Following a tough stretch in which it lost several one-run games, Greenwich posted its third straight win, beating Wilton, 12-2, in an FCIAC game.

“Everybody hit well today,” GHS coach Mary Beth Fratello said. “It was a complete-team effort.”

Sophia Prieto, one of seven seniors on the squad, earned the win on the mound for the Cardinals. Sophomore catcher Olivia McClammy hit her 12th home run of the season and drove in two runs, while senior shortstop Emma Beinstein went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI to help pace Greenwich offensively.

“Olivia is having an outstanding season, but it’s not just the home runs,” Fratello said. “When she hits the ball, she hits it so hard. I am really impressed with how she has been hitting.”

Prieto added two hits and two RBI go along with her strong pitching performance.

“She was moving the ball around, holding them to two runs and our defense played great today,” Fratello said. “We had those three one run losses, so it was tough. But now we are trying to get back on track. It was nice to see us come back with three wins in a row.”

Senior Kelly Brogan (third base) had a triple and a run scored, senior outfielder Katie Walko tripled and had two RBIs and senior outfielder Charli Faugno had one hit, one RBI and a run scored in the winning effort.

Julie Gambino, a senior outfielder, scored two runs, while senior Michelle Morganti doubled and had two RBIs for Greenwich (9-7). Junior Violet Mikalopas had an RBI and a single in the win.

“We came out with the same intensity as we did the last time we played them (a win),” Gambino said. “Our next goal is making FCIACs, we have to be one of the top eight seeds, so it would be pretty awesome if we get getting wins and make it.”

Said Prieto: “We did a good job of hitting today, we made some adjustments at the plate and did a good job. This is the best team since I’ve been here and I have a lot of confidence on the mound with the team behind me.”

Hannah Belanger had an RBI single and Hannah Lifrieri had two hits and a run scored for Wilton. Juliana Musilli also drove in a run for the Warriors.

Seven seniors were honored on the Cardinals’ Senior Day. GHS scored five runs in the first inning, one in the third inning and five in the fourth.
