Softball 2018: Norwalk looks to finish the job

NORWALK — It would be fair to say that last year’s postseason high of making the FCIAC playoffs by Norwalk High School was soon tempered by back-to-back losses in the league quarterfinals and first round of the state tournament.

With a bunch of returning veterans, though, and a talented group of sophomores ready to take the baton into the future, the Bears are looking to end the 2018 season quite differently.

“We are aiming for the FCIAC championship game and also to go deeper into the state tournament,” Norwalk coach Elaine Gratrix said.

While Norwalk was thrilled to qualify for the FCIACs last season, the sudden end to the year, thanks to a 6-3 home loss to West Haven in the first round of the state’s big school tournament, left the Bears unfulfilled.

In fact, after starting the season 13-2, the entire finishing kick of the season — 1-6 in its last seven games — was disappointing.

“We need to fight harder,” Gratrix said. “We had a lot of really great moments last year, but we let some games get away from us. This season, we need to have more consistency and resilience. Each time we take the field, we need to play with heart and tenacity and be determined to finish the job.”

The Bears boast perhaps the best hitter in the FCIAC, if not one of the best hitters in the entire state, in Dina DiBlasio.

An All-FCIAC first-team choice last season, DiBlasio will move from third base — where she has started for three straight years — to behind the plate, replacing four-year starter Sam Troetti.

While the move might initially seem a head-scratcher, DiBlasio was actually a catcher growing up and still catches during summer ball.

It is her offense that opens eyes around the league.

In 66 games during her NHS career, DiBlasio has 101 hits. She’s hitting .441 for her career, including 22 doubles, 14 triples and 17 home runs, 11 of which came last year.

She has driven in 83 in her career, including 45 last season.

She also struck out once last season in 87 plate appearances.

DiBlasio won’t be the only stick in the Norwalk lineup, making the Bears even more dangerous.

Seniors Katie Sciglimpaglia is an all-FCIAC first-team shortstop, Jessica Otto is back at first after an All-FCIAC second-team season and Skyler Suda is one of the best defensive center fielders in the league.

Gabriela Catino and Marisa Swanson, both seniors, are also returnees.

Junior pitcher Brianny Garcia returns as does her twin sister, Brenda, who is a two-year starter at second base.

Sophomore Mia Lanzarotto is also back. She can pitch and play outfield.

Lanzarotto will be joined by sophomore classmates Catherine Sheehan (3B), Erica Giglio (OF-1B), Jordan Hogan (OF), and Kaitlyn Greco (C/IF) to give the team depth.

“We’ll need to stay healthy and play up to our potential,” Gratrix said. “Our strengths are experience, solid defense and a balanced offense. I would say this is the all-around most talented NHS team I have seen in my 21 years with the program.”

How far can this team go? The sky’s the limit if they just play.

“We need to get out of our own way and show actions that are consistent with our goals,” Gratrix said. “We’ll go as far as we believe we can go.”

Fitzgerald, Brookfield rally past Hand in 7th to reach Class L softball final

WEST HAVEN—The strong bats of the Brookfield softball team carried them to a 19-4 record and a spot in Tuesday’s Class L semifinal against Daniel Hand.

So when the Bobcats trailed by one run with just two outs to spare and the season in the balance, panic wasn’t about to settle in one bit.

Stringing four hits together in the top of the seventh, the No. 3 Bobcats booked their place in the Class L final with a 6-5 win over No. 3 Daniel Hand at West Haven High. Ally Fitzgerald delivered the clutch blow for Brookfield, singling to score Cara Lennon and scoring on the play after an errant throw.

“I’m very confident in my girls because they never give up,” Brookfield coach Nick Castellano said. “They knew they could hit; they had 13 hits. We had confidence and they knew they could do it.”

Lennon — who finished the night 4-for-4 — hit a double down the line trailing 5-4 that brought Fitzgerald to the plate. A single to the outfield plated Lennon and the throw from the catcher to second base sailed high and got past the outfielder, which allowed Fitzgerald to come all the way around to score.

“I was running to first, went to second and they threw it over,” Fitzgerald said. “I just went to third, coach told me to go home and I did. It was amazing, it was nice to contribute to the whole team win right there.”

Brookfield wasn’t out of the woods yet, though. The Tigers responded with a leadoff single from Christina Coric before a ball hit to the warning track was caught. With one out Abby Geshwind hit a clean single to the outfield but led to a forceout at second. Caroline O’Connor — who drove in three of the Tigers’ five runs — hit a laser to the outfield but right at a Bobcats defender, which began the celebration for Brookfield.

“That’s the way softball is,” Hand coach Mike Niekrash said. “You hit ropes and sometimes they catch them. They had their outfield right to the fence and they caught it; we didn’t give up, a ball two feet this or that way and we’re still playing.”

The Bobcats overcame a 5-2 deficit to stun the Tigers. Avery Katz hit a clutch two-run single with two outs in the top of the sixth to pull to within 5-4 to set the stage for the final comeback.

“We’re just all really happy and it’s good to see our hard work paying off,” Lennon said. “In my four years we’ve never made it this far so it’s rewarding to see us come out with a win.”

Hand jumped out to early leads of 2-1 and 4-2 as the bats started off hot. O’Connor hit a two-run single in the first and crushed an RBI double to the wall to make it 3-2.

“It was about blinked at the end basically and give Brookfield a lot of credit, they came up in the seventh inning,” Niekrash said. “They persevered in this game, but we didn’t give up.”

ALL-SWC MATCHUP

Brookfield will square off against No. 1 Masuk Friday or Saturday at a site and time to be determined. The Bobcats — one of the few teams to put up runs — fell to the Panthers 6-4 during the regular season. It will be Brookfield’s second state final apperance; the Bobcats won Class M in 2000.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Cara Lennon, Brookfield: One of just three seniors for the Bobcats, Lennon delivered RBI singles in the first and third innings.

“I tried to just treat it like any other game,” Lennon said. “I wasn’t thinking too much about it, I just swung at good pitches.”

QUOTABLE

“There’s one thing everything forgot here, and that’s Brookfield had a tornado,” Castellano said. “We couldn’t practice for a week because school was closed. We’re doing this for Brookfield.”

Bottom of order sparks St. Joseph past Granby, into Class M softball final

STRATFORD — St. Joseph knew all about Granby standout softball pitcher Kari Marks. Coach Jeff Babineau told his players it’d take a couple of at-bats in Thursday’s CIAC Class M semifinal to get used to her.

The Cadets’ bottom of the order got the offense going their second time up. The top of the order drove them in. St. Joseph played sharp defense and beat Granby 4-2 at DeLuca Field to reach the program’s first state final since 2015.

“As the game went on, we got used to her sequence, what she was doing,” said Cadets freshman shortstop Maddie Fitzgerald, who drove in runs in the top of the fifth and top of the seventh. “We definitely executed the second time up. We got the key hits and started putting pressure on them.”

Ninth-ranked, ninth-seeded St. Joseph (22-4), winner of 11 in a row, will play for its first championship since 2010 on Saturday at 1 p.m. at West Haven. It’ll meet third-seeded Griswold (25-1), fifth-ranked in the GameTimeCT.com poll, which beat No. 2 North Branford 4-0 in the late game on Thursday.

Fifth-seeded Granby (23-3) left 12 runners on base, and the first two innings ended with Bears doubled off base on line drives.

“I couldn’t be more proud of them. It’s all about opportunity,” Granby coach Brian McDermott said. “We definitely put ourselves in a good situation. We were one hit away from cracking that game wide open. You do that early, it’s a whole different deal. The pressure changes, and the game changes.”

St. Joseph right fielder Britt Mairano made a nice catch on a sinking line drive and doubled a runner off first base to end the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and one out in the second inning, second baseman Kayla Giacobbe snagged a soft liner and doubled the runner off third.

Granby left the bases loaded in the third and fourth, with Payton Doiron getting a strikeout to end both innings.

“We gave them so many opportunities, but you know what, we talked about ‘bend but don’t break,’” St. Joseph coach Jeff Babineau said. “(The Cadets) played the out where the ball took them. They didn’t panic.”

Marks didn’t allow a hit for four innings, but Allie Petronchak and Mairano singled in the fifth. Hannah Hutchison’s single drove in two; Fitzgerald’s single brought her in from second.

Marks and Anna-Marie Groskritz had RBIs in the sixth for Granby (Marks’ double drove in Erin Henebry, who was 3-for-3), and the Bears had two in scoring position with two out, but Doiron’s ninth strikeout ended the threat. Fitzgerald singled in another run in the seventh, and Doiron ended the game with her 11th strikeout.

Kari Marks had not allowed St. Joseph a hit through four innings, but the Cadets collected four in the top of the fifth. Hannah Hutchison’s two-run single opened the scoring, and Maddie Fitzgerald drove Hutchison in from third with an RBI single.

Granby scored two runs with two out in the bottom of the sixth, on Marks’ RBI double and Anna-Marie Groskritz’s RBI single, but Payton Doiron’s ninth strikeout got the Cadets out of the jam. Doiron finished with 11 strikeouts.

The fifth-seeded Bears (23-3) left 12 runners on base, and they also had two runners doubled off base to end the first two innings.

Fitzgerald added a two-out RBI single in the seventh for St. Joseph, which will be seeking its sixth state championship in its 10th title game. It last made it in 2015 and last won in 2010.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

St. Joseph sophomore pitcher Payton Doiron was in and out of trouble but escaped when she needed it.

“Yeah, there is a little bit (of nerves),” Doiron said, “But I know my team has my back. We’ll get through it.”

GOING FOR SIX

Saturday will be the Cadets’ sixth final since 2006 and their 10th overall since 1979. They have won five titles, including three since 2006.

The last time they reached a final, though, this year’s seniors, Hutchison and Giacobbe, were freshmen.

“Hutch and Kayla really deserve it,” Fitzgerald said. “They’ve taken us under their wing and shown us the ropes. This just means a lot for us.”

Ridgefield makes history by sending four teams to state finals

$

Fans across the state will flock to several sites Friday and Saturday to cheer on their respective schools as athletes chase the immortality that goes along with winning a state championship.

Those supporting Ridgefield High School might want to make sure the gas tank is on full before departing North Salem Road.

Ridgefield became the first school to have four teams — baseball, boys volleyball, boys and girls lacrosse — reach spring finals, according to the CIAC, which added that eight schools had previously reached three finals. Two of the teams — baseball and girls lacrosse — are making their first final appearance. Three teams will play Saturday at different times, allowing die-hard fans to support each squad and their memorable runs to the final.

“It’s a testament to Ridgefield High School,” said volleyball coach Lidania Cibere. “There is such great support from everybody, from (Athletic Director Dane Street) to the principal. It’s great; these kids are student-athletes and they’re putting in the work in the classroom as well as in their sports. I think it’s rare, but it’s just great.”

It’s been another banner season for Ridgefield, which has also claimed a host of FCIAC championships over the past 18 months. This comes on the heels of the Tigers girls soccer team winning a first ever Class LL championship last December.

Throw in outstanding sprinter Emma Langis — who won the State Open crown in the 300 hurdles last week — and the Tigers are on the verge of collecting hardware on the final day of the high school season.

The games are staggered serendipitously for fans: Girls lacrosse plays at 10 a.m. at Law, followed by baseball in Middletown at Noon, and boys lacrosse at 3 p.m. in Norwalk. All three of those squads were either trailing or tied late in their respective semifinals before digging deep to pull out impressive wins.

“It will be a lot of time in the car but it’s a good problem to have,” said Street, who became AD in April, 2016. “It should be a fun day, I hope I’m not the only Tiger fan who’s getting to all of them. I think every one of our teams has a chance.”

ONE-GOAL EXPERTS

A brutal schedule and key injuries combined to help the Tigers girls lacrosse team got off to a slow start at 3-4. The last of those defeats was a 7-6 defeat to New Canaan, their opponents in Saturday’s final.

“We did some goal-setting, got working hard, stayed the course on what we wanted to be on and off the field,” said coach Cece Berger. “As we worked we went through and learned from our mistakes each day.”

Players came back and momentum began to build for Ridgefield, but a particular FCIAC rival stood in the way of making a deep run in states. Ridgefield fell to Greenwich 20-10 in the regular season and 13-8 in the FCIAC quarterfinals, but the Tigers upended the Cards 7-6 in the state quarterfinals.

“We knew we were going see Greenwich a third time and it was just learning from what we did wrong the first game that we used early in second game,” Berger said. “We knew by the third game we could play with anyone. They have good players and we had to be at our best.”

The drama wasn’t over yet.

Ridgefield then got a goal from Alyssa Gagnon with 4.9 seconds left in regulation and one from leader Caroline Curnal early in overtime to secure a dramatic 14-13 win over Cheshire in the semis. The Tigers are a win against the Rams away from a first title.

“The team I’m most excited is for the girls team making it for the first time,” said boys coach Roy Colsey. “We want to build a strong lacrosse culture — not just boys lacrosse but lacrosse in general. Seeing Cece and her team advance gives our whole town a boost; I’m thrilled they’re doing a great thing.”

POCKET ACES

The Ridgefield baseball team will also be making its first state final appearances after riding the right arms of senior Alex Price and sophomore Matt DeLuca. The pair both made contributions during the Tigers’ 2-1, 10-inning classic against Amity in Wednesday’s semifinals. Price pitched into the ninth inning while DeLuca got the last four outs.

It was a fitting way to advance for Ridgefield, which had hopes of achieving the feat last year before falling in the semifinals. Coach Paul Fabbri has built the Tigers into a force in the past six years, culminating with Saturday’s matchup against SCC power Cheshire at Palmer Field.

“I think the six years has kind of brought stability to the program,” Fabbri said. “Also the youth programs in town always been pretty strong; it really is an effort throughout town that stretches down to feeder programs. We’ve had some great athletes over the past two years.”

Price, DeLuca and senior Jake Artzt have combined to post a 17-4 record with more than 150 strikeouts for Ridgefield with an ERA close to 1.00.

ANOTHER SHOT AT GOLAITH

The Ridgefield boys lacrosse team had a relatively simple path on paper to the Class L final, avoiding all the FCIAC heavyweights. They’ll meet the biggest one of those Saturday when Darien puts its 76-game win streak spanning more than three seasons on the line at McMahon High School.

“It’s Darien,” Colsey said. “They’ve made this a much bigger game by also having a 76-game win streak and that’s a testament to them to be the best team in the state. This is a tremendous opportunity for us; we didn’t want them to lose until we saw them again.”

But the journey is never as simple as it seems, and Ridgefield had to rally from a sizable deficit to slip past Glastonbury in the semis. The Tomahawks — who beat Ridgefield by five goals in last year’s playoffs — led 5-0 late in the third quarter before defender Luke Gaydos began taking faceoffs and turned the tide in the Tigers’ favor.

The Tigers — who fell to Darien 11-6 during the regular season — will be making their sixth final appearance; Colsey won a state championship when his squad beat Fairfield Prep in 2011.

“We talk about when we start the year; being on the field on the last day of the season,” said Colsey. “We don’t talk about winning a state championship specifically, but we talk about making sure the seniors get an opportunity on the last day; it’s something we’ve worked towards.”

THRILLING FINISH

If it wasn’t for a group in Westport, it could be the Tigers that would be wrapping up their season with a championship banner in boys volleyball. All that separated Ridgefield from perfection was Staples, as four losses to the Wreckers — one in the FCIAC final and one in the Class L final Thursday night — led to a pair of silver medals.

Ridgefield finished its season 21-4 after a sensational effort against the Wreckers. Swept the first three times they faced Staples, the Tigers almost claimed the upset in a five-set loss, the final game coming down to a 15-13 score.

“What I always want out of our kids is to give our best effort,” Street said. “Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose; that’s where we are in education-based athletics. You have to learn from each experience and respect the effort from the other team.”

This is a team that isn’t a stranger to state finals. The Tigers won three straight titles from 2014-16 and appeared in their sixth final overall in 15 years on Thursday.

Davis rallies Stafford past 3-time S champ Holy Cross; Bulldogs win first state title since 1976

STRATFORD — Hanna Davis’ RBI single to left capped a four-run rally in the sixth and vaulted Stafford to the Class S softball championship, 5-4, over three-time defending champion Holy Cross of Waterbury Friday night at DeLuca Field.

This is the first state softball championship for the school since 1976.

Down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, and looking like it would be the fourth-straight victim in Holy Cross’ run of titles, Stafford stormed back.

CIAC STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SCOREBOARD

Beginning with an error that allowed Julia Milnes to reach, Stafford loaded the bases with one out. Meg McDermott and Ryleigh Gilman hit back-to-back singles with two outs to tie the game up at 4.

That set the stage for Davis’ winning single. In the top of the seventh, Davis, who had come in in relief for Abbe Minor in the fifth inning, went to the mound and fought off Holy Cross’ last-ditch attempt.

With two on and two outs, Davis got the last batter grounded to first base and Stafford celebrated its first title in 42 years. McDermott finished 4-for-4 and had three RBIs to earn the game’s MVP for the Bulldogs.

The score was tied 1-1 after the first inning and stayed that way until Holy Cross took a 4-1 lead with a three-run fifth. Ali Brown had an RBI single to give the Crusaders the lead and then Holy Cross added three more on a hit and two Stafford errors.

No. 1 Masuk routs Brookfield, caps unbeaten season with Class L softball title

WEST HAVEN — The perfect team received a (near) perfect performance at the perfect time. It came courtesy of pitcher Samantha Schiebe, who allowed only two hits and struck out 14 over seven mesmerizing innings against SWC counterpart Brookfield on Friday.

Schiebe’s brilliant performance in the circle helped the top-seeded Panthers complete an undefeated season with a 10-0 victory in the Class L championship at Biondi Field.

“They came in ready,” Masuk coach Leigh Barone said. “She was one that was definitely ready.”

CIAC SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP SCOREBOARD

So, too, was center fielder Megan McFarland, who tripled twice, doubled once and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Panthers’ 10-hit night. The breakout performance earned McFarland Co-MVP honors with fellow junior Schiebe.

“We just came out strong and we came out hard,” Schiebe said.

The victory capped a 27-0 season for the Panthers and gave the perennial contender its first state title since 2013 and fifth overall. Third-seeded Brookfield, which was appearing in its first final since 2000, concluded its season at 20-5.

The Bobcats simply had no answer for Schiebe. The right-hander struck out the first nine batters she faced and did not allow a runner to advance past second base all night.

“Sam was on,” Brookfield coach Nick Castellano said. “She was throwing the high ball and we were swinging at the high pitch. We should’ve laid off it a bunch of times but we didn’t. The girls will be back, they just couldn’t adjust. Sam pitched a hell of a game. That’s a great team.”

It’s a team that went into the postseason ranked No. 1 in the GameTimeCT/Register poll. The Panthers will likely end there as well after outscoring the opposition 44-2 across four games in the state tournament.

McFarland got the scoring started against Brookfield with a first-inning triple off Alyssa Lionetti. Her second triple of the night came just two innings later and put the Panthers ahead 3-0. That lead grew to 8-0 in the fourth on a two-run double by shortstop Alexa Bacoulis. In all, the Panthers scored in four of the six innings in which they batted.

“Going into the season, we knew we were going to go far,” McFarland said. “Winning states, that was kind of like an if. But now we won it, so we feel pretty good.”

The title was also the first for the Panthers under Barone, who succeeded Jacqui Sheftz as coach in 2015. The Panthers lost the 2016 Class L final to Fitch, a game in which Schiebe started as a freshman.

“Today she came in and she was comfortable,” Barone said. “She was ready. This was the second time she’s been here.”

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Samantha Schiebe, Masuk, P: The junior was close to untouchable in the circle, pitching a two-hit shutout while striking out 14. She walked one and allowed just two balls to be hit past the infield.

QUOTABLE

“It’s a privilege to have two SWC teams in the championship game. It took us a long time to get here. We did a great job. I’m very proud of my girls. I’d go to battle with them any day.” — Brookfield coach Nick Castellano

MAKE IT TWO-FOR-TWO

In their lone regular-season meeting on May 14, Masuk edged Brookfield 6-4. The fact that the Bobcats were able to push across a couple runs that game against Schiebe left Castellano and Co. feeling confident heading into their state-championship rematch. Schiebe said she didn’t change her approach despite that outing. “Nothing different,” she said.

Amity overpowers defending champion Trumbull, wins sixth Class LL softball championship

WEST HAVEN — Five days after staging one of the most memorable comebacks in the Class LL softball tournament, fifth-seeded Amity was back to business. There was a championship at stake, and the Spartans made sure not to let it slip out of their grasp.

Showing the same poise and determination at the plate that helped fuel their miraculous seventh-inning rally against Southington in the semifinals, the Spartans made the most of their return to the big stage. They knocked around Trumbull’s pitching for 17 hits and rolled to a 13-7 victory in the LL final on Saturday at Biondi Field.

“We needed to hit. We knew we needed to string hits together and get on the board early and as often as we can,” Amity coach Sara Hale said. “We wanted to win every inning.”

CIAC SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP SCOREBOARD

The Spartans delivered all the offense they needed. Seven different players tallied at least one hit, including Brooke Matyasovsky and Danielle Nordyk. The duo combined to go 9-for-10 at the plate and were named co-MVPs of the tournament.

“You have to credit Amity,” Trumbull coach Jacqui Sheftz said. “Seventeen hits, that’s obviously no joke.”

For the Spartans, it was their first title since 2012 and sixth in program history. It was the perfect ending to a season that included 24 wins in 28 tries and a runner-up finish in the SCC tournament.

Bidding for its second straight state championship, Trumbull (24-3) watched the Spartans jump out to an 11-0 lead after five innings. That lead grew to 13 runs in the seventh before Trumbull tried staging a rally against right-hander Grace Whitman. A grand slam by first baseman Courtney Fairfield cut the lead to 13-5, but Kelly Pritchard came on to record the final out. A long-awaited celebration ensued.

“We wanted to have fun and we wanted to play hard,” said Matyasovsky, who went 4-for-5 with a game-high six RBIs, including a two-run single to open the scoring in the first inning. “I think that we wanted it more.”

Nordyk, the center fielder, had five hits, including a single off Mackenzie Bruggeman in the sixth inning to give the Spartans an 11-0 lead. Marissa Dwyer went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Nicole Koshes added a two-run triple.

The Spartans, who staged a five-run rally to beat Southington 6-5 in the semifinals on Monday, made their at-bats count against Bruggeman and reliever Emily Gell. They held leads of 4-0 after the third inning and 8-0 after the fourth.

“When we started hitting, we started scoring more runs, which motivated us to score even more,” Nordyk said.

Added Sheftz: “Defensively, my team, throughout this season, made some of those plays that we didn’t quite make today. That’s softball. Amity found holes. Their hitters found holes, and we hit balls at people.”

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Brooke Matyasovsky, Amity: The senior had four hits and drove in six runs to pace the Spartans’ attack.

“We were on a roll. We knew we could do it. We had confidence in them.” — Amity coach Sara Hale

CLOSE CALL

Trumbull left fielder Ava Dunn appeared to throw out Danielle Nordyk at the plate in the third inning, but Nordyk was ruled safe because of an obstruction call. It was a critical moment in the game for both sides, as Amity saw its lead grow to 3-0 with still only one out on the scoreboard. The Spartans went on to score another run in the frame on a double by Melissa Dwyer. “I think that’s a huge call in a state playoff game,” Eagles coach Jacqui Sheftz said. “It’s 2-0 and you get that obstruction call. That would’ve been out No. 2. The next girl (grounded out), we would’ve been out of the inning. … I think that was a huge turning point.”

10 takeaways from the CIAC softball state championships

Recaps: Class LL | Class L | Class M | Class S

[See image gallery at www.gametimect.com]

The high school softball season came to a close Saturday afternoon with Amity defeating Trumbull 13-7 to win the Class LL title. That came on the heels of wins by Masuk in Class L, Stafford in Class S and St. Joseph in Class M.

But before we close the book on the year, let’s recap some of the most memorable sights and sounds of Championship Weekend:

1.) SCHIEBE SENSATIONAL: Sam Schiebe etched her name into Masuk lore with her performance in the circle this postseason. The junior right-hander was simply dominant, throwing three shutouts in the Class L tournament to help the Panthers cap a 27-0 season with their first state title since 2013. Her 14-strikeout, two-hit outing in a 10-0 victory over Brookfield in the title game was a work of art. It belongs right alongside those countless gems thrown by Rachele Fico and Tatum Buckley.

2.) CADETS FINISH THE JOB: Despite its stretch of four FCIAC titles in five seasons — the most recent coming last month in a 6-0 victory over Trumbull — St. Joseph entered Saturday having not won a state championship since 2010. Determined to end that drought, outfielder Hannah Hutchinson (3-for-4 with a triple) and pitcher Payton Doiron (complete game, five-hitter) came through in the clutch for the Cadets in a 5-2 defeat of Griswold in the Class M final.

3.) AMITY DOESN’T MISS A BEAT: There’s an old adage in baseball (and softball, for that matter) that says momentum is only as strong as your next day’s starting pitcher. While that’s true, there sure seemed to be some carryover from Amity’s dramatic seventh-inning comeback five nights earlier against Southington. The Spartans hit right from the start of Saturday’s Class LL final against Trumbull, piling up 17 hits in a 13-7 rout. Brooke Matyasovsky and Danielle Nordyk were the two stars at the plate, combining to go 9-for-10 with seven RBIs.

4.) WHITMAN A WINNER: Don’t overlook the solid performance that right-hander Grace Whitman delivered in the circle for Amity. The senior held the defending champion Eagles scoreless for six innings before running out of gas. Spartans coach Sara Hale said of Whitman’s outing: “Grace did phenomenal. The last few seasons, she’s been taking it for us. She has the confidence, and I have all the confidence in the world for her. I wanted her to finish it out so badly. She went out there and threw her hardest as long as she possibly could.”

5.) MOVE OVER HOLY CROSS: There’s a new champion in Class S. Holy Cross’ dreams of a four-peat were dashed by Stafford, which posted a 5-4 victory to collect its first state title since 1976 and second all-time. The Bulldogs had a flair for the dramatic, overcoming a 4-1 deficit in the sixth inning. They’ll remember that one forever. Stafford’s Meg McDermott was 4-for-4 with three RBIs to earn MVP. Hannah Davis was the winning pitcher and had the winning RBI.

6.) PROWESS AT THE PLATE: If Masuk’s lineup is not the best in the state, it’s one of the best. Six players had at least one hit against Brookfield, including center fielder Megan McFarland. The junior (whose father,  Jack, coached Staples to the Class LL baseball title last year) tripled twice, doubled once and drove in two runs to share MVP honors with Schiebe. The Panthers averaged a whopping 11 runs per game for the tournament.

7.) CLOSE BUT NOT CLOSE ENOUGH: Trumbull’s final record was stellar (24-3). It seems almost unfair that the Eagles won’t be going home with a championship this season. But sports, as we all know, can be unpredictable.

8.) WALDRON STARS: We’d be remiss if we did not highlight Griswold pitcher Maya Waldron’s performance in the Class M tournament. Waldon tossed a perfect game against North Branford in the semifinals in a 4-0 win, then threw an incredible 137 pitches just two days later in the finals against St. Joseph.

9.) SPREADING THE WEALTH: The four champions came from four different conferences: SCC, SWC, FCIAC and NCCC. This marks the first time since 2014 that that’s happened.

10.) SUNSHINE AT LAST: After all those postponements that we were forced to endure earlier this spring because of rain and snow (not to mention a tornado), Mother Nature came through for us this weekend. All sun and not a single rain delay. Bravo.

The FINAL 2018 GameTimeCT Softball Top 10 Poll: MASUK IS NO. 1

$

Class L softball championship action between Masuk and Brookfield in West Haven, Conn. on Friday June 8, 2018.

It’s only fitting that the lone team to post an undefeated record would finish atop the final edition of the GameTimeCT/Register Top 10 poll.

Masuk finished off its season in style, rolling through the Class L tournament en route to its fourth state championship in school history and first under coach Leigh Barone. Masuk completed its 27-0 season with a 10-0 rout of Brookfield in the final Friday night.

“This is really special because this is the first team that’s I’m seeing in and seeing out,” Barone said. “I’ve been able to see all my freshman grow from freshman year to senior year as starters. I wouldn’t want it for anybody else, they deserve it.”

The Panthers put it all together during their run through the postseason. The bats quickly headed up, averaging 11 runs per game. Combine that with the dynamic pitching duo of Sam Schiebe and Maddie Procyk — both of whom return next season — and Masuk cruised.

Schiebe starred in the final win over the Bobcats, striking out the first nine batters she faced. Masuk allowed just 14 runs in its 27 wins, nine of which came in two games.

“It was a very cool experience coming out here and watching her have 14 strikeouts, that’s pretty insane,” said junior outfielder Meg McFarland.

Masuk received every first place vote, claiming top spot against Class LL champ Amity and Class M winner St. Joseph. Class S champion Stafford gets into the top 10 for the first time at No. 10. Four of the top seven teams in the poll are LL schools.

Vote For The 2018 Stars of Spring Championship season

$

Who was the star of the 2018 Spring Championships? There were so many great performances from across the state championship meets and games, but who stood out above the rest?

It’s that time of the year again. Time to cast your votes.

This is, of course, an unscientific poll. But let’s have some fun, shall we?

Memorable softball semifinal comeback the highlight for No. 2 Amity

Trailing 5-1 with one inning left to save the season against one of the top pitchers in the state, Amity coach Sara Hale gathered her team for potentially the final time. The Spartans’ sixth state championship never seemed so far away as Kara Zazzaro and Southington presented a massive roadblock in the Class LL semifinals.

The belief was still there, though.

It started with one hit — a double by Brooke Matyasovsky — and before the Spartans knew it they somehow had a 6-5 lead. An offense that put up big run totals this spring woke up in a big way with its backs against the wall, and with it carried momentum into the Class LL championship game.

Amity finishes No. 2 in final poll

“We knew we were down, but they believed in themselves,” Hale said. “I just said ‘let’s go and make a game out of this’; the captains spoke after I did. Brooke hit that double and that gave us momentum. It was very stressful; as much you believe and think they could do it is the last inning and the last chance.”

Four days later the Spartans claimed a first title for Hale — in her third season — and finished the season 24-4. Amity jumped out to a double-digit lead en route to a 13-7 win over FCIAC squad Trumbull to secure a first championship since 2012.

A slugfest in the final played right into Amity’s hands. The Spartans socked 17 hits in the win over the Eagles; the 20 runs produced by the Spartans and Trumbull tied the record for most in a state final.

“Our offense was unbelievable,” Hale said. “No. 1-to-9, we could hit the ball every game. (Leadoff hitter) Nicole Koshes set the tone for the whole game, whenever she gets on base we do well.”

It didn’t take long before coach Hale realized she had a special offense on her hands. An 8-1 start full of crooked numbers on the board lifted hopes of a championship. The run to the state title began after falling 12-8 to North Haven in the SCC final.

“I knew going into it with the returners we had; we brought back our big bats and our speed,” Hale said. “We thought we were going to be a team to reckoned with; I didn’t realize how special we were just as a team until halfway through the season. I stopped and reflected and realized we have something special.”

Amity blanked Hamden and Warde in comfortable wins to start the state playoffs. The Spartans then held off a hard-charging E.O. Smith in an 8-6 win after the Panthers scored three in the seventh. After stunning the Blue Knights in the semis, Amity led Trumbull 11-0 after five innings.

Pitcher Grace Whitman tossed six-plus shutout innings before Trumbull staged an incredible rally to plate seven runs in the final frame. Hale wanted the two-year starter to close out her final game as the Eagles threatened to pull to within striking distance. Freshman Kelly Pritchard closed out the win.

“My whole thing was I really wanted Grace to finish the game,” Hale said. “She pitched incredible for six and-two-thirds innings, I can’t give her enough credit. She’s been a rock for two seasons; I’ve been blown away by her perseverance.”

Seniors stepped up big late in the tournament for the Spartans. Koshes played a big part in the win over Southington, and Matyasovsky and Danielle Nordyk combined for nine hits in the final to earn co-MVP honors. The Spartans will graduate six seniors.

“They will certainly be missed,” Hale said. “Those were a great group of girls who believed and rooted for each other. Every game it was someone different and they all came together on Saturday and were consistent. I can’t even begin to think what it’s going to be like without them.”

Stamford’s Mattioli named 2018 Rioux Award winner

Like many senior female athletes in Stamford, Gloria Mattioli dropped in her application for the Allyson Rioux Memorial Award and waited.

Mattioli believed she was qualified, but with what she felt were so many deserving athletes in the city, she kept her hopes high but her expectations reasonable.

Then the call came, and before the words were even out of the mouth of the person on the other end, Mattioli was in tears.

The news being delivered was that Mattioli had in fact been named as the 2018 recipient of the Allyson Rioux Memorial Award.

She was a two-sport athlete at Stamford High, excelling in volleyball and softball.

Mattoli was a three-year varsity starter for volleyball, where she was part of a state championship, and a four-year varsity starter for softball.

She also volunteers her time working closely with the Unified Sports program at Stamford.

As a girl growing up playing sports in Stamford, it is the honor of a lifetime for Mattioli.

“I waited for three weeks after I sent in my letter and then I got a call saying I had won. I started crying on the phone, I couldn’t believe I got it. I was shocked,” Mattioli said. “I am friends with other girls who applied and I know other really good athletes applied. There are so many people who could get this award and I am so honored to get it.”

Mattioli said she became aware of Rioux during her time in youth basketball in the city.

“I played basketball until freshman year and playing in the youth league, we had the Allyson Rioux Award and I learned about who she was and what she meant to girls sports in Stamford,” Mattioli said. “I always wished I could win this award and I worked very hard for so long and it means so much to me.”

This is the 29th year of the $5,000 Allyson Rioux Memorial Award given to a senior female athlete in the Stamford Schools.

Allyson Rioux was a standout softball player from Stamford who died in 1989 from an inoperable brain tumor.

The memorial award was established in Rioux’s memory to annually recognize someone who has proven herself to be an athlete of exceptional ability, determination, courage and an unselfish devotion to her teammates.

Cheryl Tiscia, the president of the Allyson Rioux Memorial Foundation and Rioux’s sister, said Mattioli represents the qualities beyond athleticism that made her sister unique.

“Everyone we spoke with reiterated how Gloria puts her teams first and personal statistics second,” Tiscia said. “She is so unselfish and practices sportsmanship and friendship with teammates and opponents. These were qualities Allyson possessed above and beyond her athletic abilities.”

Someone who knows all about winning the award is 2005 recipient and Stamford head softball and assistant volleyball coach, Melissa Giordano.

Giordano coached Mattioli for four years in two sports as well as working with her during Unified Sports and said she is very deserving of the award.

“I think it is a big honor, very prestigious. It only goes to one female athlete from the entire city. For her to win it is a very big deal,” Giordano said. “She has a contagious attitude and is a really funny person. She loves to joke around. She is a totally different kid than you see on the field, she is all business then. Off the field, though, she has a great personality.”

Giordano said on the field, Mattioli playing second and Dana Serricchio at shortstop had a great rapport on the field making great plays, but Mattioli’s best asset was her competitiveness.

Mattioli said she could not choose which sport she enjoyed more because volleyball and softball are so different, but said she loved both because of her teammates.

“I have loved playing both sports for Stamford,” Mattioli said. “I will miss all the girls and all the coaches. There was never any drama on these teams, never any negative stuff. The teams had such family feelings and I am going to miss them so much.”

Mattioli will be attending University of New Hampshire in the fall.

Brakettes rally to defeat High School Seniors in All-Star game

STRATFORD — Among the last three left on DeLuca Field on Thursday night were three softball players familiar with the territory, used to playing big high school tournament games there.

In a St. Joseph jersey, playing for a team of state senior high school all-stars, was Hannah Hutchison. In Brakettes red, white and blue were Nicole Williams and Lauren Pitney, her former Cadets teammates.

“It’s fun to play against them, to hit against Nicole,” said Hutchison, who led off Thursday’s game with a double to left off Williams. “I thought it was a pretty good game up to the seventh or eighth inning, and then they just kept hitting.”

The Brakettes came from behind, an unfamiliar situation, to beat the all-stars 9-5.

Pitney and Williams were in Pennsylvania with the Brakettes last weekend when Hutchison and the Cadets won the Class M championship. But Williams said they saw St. Joseph’s semifinal win over Granby.

“It was really cool. They were our freshmen when we were seniors and juniors,” said Pitney, who was the senior in 2015, the last time the Cadets reached the final. “To see how they’ve grown the program was actually really cool to see.”

“And they finally won states,” said Williams, a junior then.

“We were close every single year, literally,” said Hutchison, the freshman then and one of the senior leaders this year.

Hutchison said she’s going to Auburn, but won’t play softball. Brakettes manager John Stratton urged her to reconsider.

Pitney and Williams, both from Ansonia, are college players at Manhattan.

“We just follow each other everywhere,” Williams said.

Pitney, who had an on-base percentage of .505 and slugged .570 in her junior year, was named second-team All-MAAC and selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association to the All-Northeast Region team. Williams split time in the circle, going 10-10.

The Jaspers went 10-2 down the stretch to get into the MAAC tournament and finished fourth in the playoffs.

“We kind of started playing loose,” Pitney said.

“We had nothing to lose, so why not give it all we had? And we went on a streak,” Williams said.

Now it’s back to the Brakettes, who lost to the (Lancaster, Pa.) Pegasus in pool play last weekend at the Cornfield Classic in Lyons, Pa., qualified for a rematch in the tournament final but saw it rained out.

Thursday, Amity’s Brooke Matyasovsky hit a three-run home run off Ali DuBois in the top of the fifth inning to put the high school all-stars ahead 5-4. The Brakettes came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning: Denise Denis walked with the bases loaded, and Jolie Duffner’s two-run single gave them the lead for good.

The Brakettes have scheduled games against the high school all-stars for the previous 10 years; one was rained out. In the nine games that happened before Thursday, the Brakettes had outscored the seniors 99-7.

Kaysee Talcik of Shelton closed the door Thursday with three perfect innings for the Brakettes, striking out the last five batters and six in all.

“Pitching, you know, Kaysee Talcik did a nice job, but the other two, (the high schoolers) hit the ball too hard,” Stratton said. “They’re coming for some lessons, to make the ball move better, get that changeup going.”

Trumbull’s Delilha DeStefano drove in Hutchison with a first-inning RBI single. That was it for Williams’ three innings of work. Pitney, at second base, went 1-for-4 and scored a run in the second inning.

“Pitney’s probably one of the best second basemen I’ve seen,” Stratton said. “In all the years we’ve had good second basemen, she’s as good as any one of them.

“She’s a powerful hitter. She’s got to learn a bit more about hitting, but she’s a nice, nice player.”

Williams noted that the team has a few new players in the mix to go with mainstays like Denis and Brandice Balschmiter.

“Once we get working with each other, it’s going to be back to, like, normal, how we always play,” Pitney said. “It’s going to be exciting.”
